Geriatrics – Osteoporosis

Geriatrics is a medical specialty focused on the health and well-being of older adults. Geriatric specialists assess, diagnose and treat conditions commonly affecting older people, including chronic diseases, frailty, dementia and cognitive decline. The primary goal of geriatrics is to improve older adults’ quality of life by providing care that takes their physical, mental and social needs into account.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become fragile, weak and more susceptible to fractures. It occurs when the bone remodelling process, in which bone tissue is continuously broken down and rebuilt, becomes unbalanced, with bone loss exceeding the formation of new bone tissue. This leads to a decrease in bone mineral density and a weakening of bone structure.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is usually diagnosed through a bone densitometry scan, a non-invasive test that measures bone mineral density. Once diagnosed, osteoporosis treatment may include:

• Lifestyle changes: a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, regular exercise, avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol consumption can help maintain bone health.
• Supplements: if the diet does not provide enough calcium and vitamin D, the doctor may recommend supplements.
• Medication: in cases of severe osteoporosis or a high risk of fractures, specific medications may be prescribed to slow bone loss or increase the formation of new bone tissue.
• Fall prevention: adopting safety measures at home, such as removing obstacles and using handrails, can reduce the risk of fractures caused by falls.
