Medical Oncology

Oncology is a medical specialty concerned with the study, diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumours, also known as cancer. Oncologists are medical specialists who focus on the care of patients affected by this complex group of diseases.

Oncology includes several disciplines, such as medical oncology, radiation oncology and surgical oncology, which work together to provide comprehensive and personalised treatment. Oncologists may use a combination of treatments, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and cancer surgery, with the aim of controlling or eliminating the tumour and improving the patient’s prognosis.

Oncology is a constantly evolving field, with significant advances in understanding the mechanisms of tumour growth and in the development of new targeted therapies.

Oncology consultation

An oncology consultation is carried out to diagnose or monitor a tumour.

The consultation allows the oncologist to review the results of previous blood tests or diagnostic examinations in order to determine the most appropriate treatment pathway.

A GP may recommend an oncology consultation when cancer is suspected or when a tumour has already been diagnosed and further treatment needs to be planned.

Symptoms that may prompt a GP to recommend an oncology consultation include weight loss, excessive fatigue, fever, cough, shortness of breath (dyspnoea), bleeding, abdominal pain and the appearance of new skin lesions.

During the consultation, the oncologist reviews the patient’s medical history, paying particular attention to any family history of cancer and potential risk factors, such as exposure to carcinogens and smoking. Previous examinations are reviewed and the patient’s reported symptoms are assessed.

This is followed by a physical examination, during which the relevant areas of the body are assessed.

The oncology consultation concludes with a discussion with the patient regarding the diagnosis, any further investigations that may be required and the appropriate treatment for the specific condition.
