Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a non-conventional medicine recognised by the World Health Organization and defined in 2007 as a form of medicine based on primary manual contact during diagnosis and treatment.
Osteopathy is based on considering the human being as a unity of body, mind and spirit.
Through osteopathic assessment (postural analysis and palpation), it is possible to identify potential disorders and address them using manual techniques aimed at correcting imbalances and restoring the physiological conditions of movement and, consequently, health.
Without the use of medications, natural remedies, medical devices or electromedical equipment, an osteopath can use tissue manipulation to stimulate the body’s natural self-healing processes.
Osteopathy does not address the recovery of mobility lost as a result of neurological or orthopaedic conditions, trauma or surgery, and therefore cannot be considered a form of rehabilitation: it is complementary to other healthcare professions, such as physiotherapy and conventional medicine.
The disorders that osteopathy may address involve the neuromusculoskeletal, craniosacral and visceral systems.
In addition to providing valuable support in the treatment of many conditions, osteopathy can also play a role in prevention and the maintenance of health.

Osteopathic treatment
The consultation with the osteopath begins with a medical history focused on the patient’s main complaint, before exploring any previous conditions or osteopathic dysfunctions that may be related to the problem, considered as part of the patient’s overall condition.
The therapist identifies barriers that restrict the mobility and elasticity of anatomical structures and may limit the body’s physiological functions. This assessment enables the therapist to develop an appropriate treatment plan. To this end, structural or functional manual techniques are used on the structures of the musculoskeletal system (ligaments, muscles, fasciae, bones, etc.), as well as on the visceral and craniosacral systems.
Osteopathy treats reversible functional disorders. In other words, it is not indicated, for example, in cases of fractures or tumours, or for the treatment of serious illnesses that may endanger a person’s life.
