Gnathology and TMJ Disorders

Gnathology (from the Greek γναθός = jaw, λόγος = study) is a branch of dentistry that studies the physiology and disorders of the jaw, the relationship between the upper and lower jaws, the teeth, the temporomandibular joints, the muscles involved and the nervous system that controls them, including the tongue, assessing chewing, swallowing, speech and posture.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders can cause various conditions and symptoms, including headaches, earaches, tinnitus, instability, neck pain and lower back pain. The TMJ is one of the joints involved in postural imbalances.

The treatment of TMJ disorders requires an interdisciplinary approach. In addition to targeted occlusal therapy (bite splints, functional or fixed orthodontic treatment, prosthetic treatment), a balanced multidisciplinary approach may involve physiotherapy / neurology / orthopaedics / ENT / ophthalmology…
