Oral Hygiene and Prevention
Oral hygiene involves the daily and systematic use of a toothbrush, dental floss and other home oral care tools to prevent plaque and tartar buildup.
Professional oral hygiene complements daily home care and is carried out by the dentist or dental hygienist to remove tartar deposits (above and below the gum line) and provide personalised support for both adults and children.
Only through consistent home and professional oral care, including regular check-ups, is it possible to effectively manage periodontal disease.
Prevention should begin in early childhood. For this reason, the dental hygienist at our clinic organises group oral hygiene sessions to raise awareness among parents and children.

The techniques used by the dental professional include:
Scaling: removal of tartar above the gum line, followed by polishing of the tooth surfaces using specific pastes or powders.
Root planing: performed under local anaesthesia to remove tartar below the gum line in the presence of periodontal pockets. When the pockets are very deep, the gum tissue may need to be lifted from the underlying bone; this procedure is known as open-flap root planing.
Dental sealants are recommended for children when the first permanent molars erupt (at around 6 years of age), and subsequently for premolars and second molars, to help prevent tooth decay. Due to their deep grooves, these teeth are more susceptible to bacteria and plaque present in the oral cavity.
Teeth whitening is a safe cosmetic procedure that acts on natural teeth, making them whiter. The technique involves the use of a professional dental lamp that activates a whitening agent applied to the front surface of the teeth. The whitening agent contains hydrogen peroxide and silicon dioxide particles that rapidly oxidise dental pigments, restoring a brighter, whiter appearance. The enamel changes from dull and yellowish to bright white.
There are also other types of whitening treatments that can help address discolouration caused by systemic conditions, fluorosis, tetracycline use, etc.
