Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders affecting the eyes and vision.

Ophthalmologists are medical specialists who diagnose and manage a wide range of eye conditions, including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. They perform eye examinations, prescribe glasses or contact lenses, provide medical and surgical treatment, and help preserve eye health and vision.

Eye Examination

An eye examination assesses the health of the eyes and helps detect or rule out conditions that may affect vision.

An examination is recommended when symptoms occur, such as reduced visual acuity, blurred vision, changes in colour perception, dark spots or coloured spots in the visual field, halos, partial loss of vision, or following trauma or injury to the eye.

The examination may include assessment of the ocular surface, corneal topography, corneal pachymetry and tonometry.

Follow-up Eye Examination

A follow-up eye examination is performed after a period of time determined by the specialist. It focuses primarily on a previously identified condition and is used to assess its progression, improvement or response to treatment.

Glaucoma Assessment

Glaucoma is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve and is often associated with increased pressure inside the eye.

Damage to the optic nerve can lead to progressive loss of the visual field, which may gradually become narrower if the disease progresses.

Early diagnosis is essential because vision loss caused by glaucoma cannot be reversed. Regular eye examinations are therefore important, particularly for people at increased risk.

Fundus Examination

A fundus examination examines the structures located at the back of the eye, including the vitreous, retina and optic nerve.

To examine these structures, it may be necessary to dilate the pupil using mydriatic eye drops. Pupil dilation usually begins within 10–15 minutes and may remain effective for approximately 45–60 minutes.

The examination can help diagnose conditions affecting the vitreous, retina and optic nerve, including macular disorders, retinal vascular diseases, vitreous detachment, retinal detachment and glaucoma.

A fundus examination may also be requested by other medical specialists as part of the diagnostic assessment of systemic conditions that can affect the retina or optic nerve.

Orthoptic Assessment

An orthoptic assessment is used to diagnose or rule out disorders affecting eye movement and binocular vision, including double vision, strabismus, amblyopia and ocular muscle disorders.

Orthoptics is a specialised area of eye care concerned with the assessment and management of disorders involving eye movements and coordination between the eyes.

Tonometry

Tonometry measures intraocular pressure (IOP), the pressure inside the eye. It is an important examination in the assessment and monitoring of glaucoma.

Corneal Topography

Corneal topography is a non-invasive examination that creates a detailed map of the curvature and shape of the cornea.

Using projected light patterns and computerised analysis, the instrument measures the corneal surface and generates a detailed corneal map.

The examination can identify irregularities in the shape of the cornea and is particularly useful in the assessment of high or irregular astigmatism, corneal disorders, refractive surgery and corneal transplantation.

Specialist Contact Lens Fitting

Specialist contact lens fitting involves the assessment and fitting of customised contact lenses for visual defects or eye conditions that cannot be adequately managed with standard soft contact lenses.

BIO MEDICAL CENTER

Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology uses specially designed contact lenses, generally worn overnight, to temporarily reshape the cornea and correct refractive errors.

After the lenses are removed, the cornea temporarily retains its modified shape, allowing clear vision during the day without conventional contact lenses or glasses.

The effect is temporary and requires regular use of the lenses according to the specialist’s instructions.
